I am not an artist, so my interpretation of art is much different from someone who spent years studying and who has earned the title of artist. I do, however, know a nice piece of art when I see it. This week I am asking for your opinion. Do you think it is (a) worthy of being classified as art or (b) should I toss it?
A true Southerner, I was born in Georgia but lived most of my adult life in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 2001, my husband and I retired and moved to beautiful Sarasota, FL. We quickly realized that we were not retirement material and could not play golf two or three times a week so we got our real estate licenses and affiliated with Coldwell Banker on Longboat Key. My love for photography is very beneficial to me when photographing interiors and exteriors of the homes we list.
Other than photography, I have a keen interest in genealogy and golf (whenever I can find the spare time from our real estate practice).

You have an amazing touch with compositing, but this one doesn’t work for me – can’t even tell you why not. I think you have set the bar too high with your others.

Mary Nell, this is tough as I don’t like to write if I don’t like something. As Tim stated, you have done some wonderful pieces. This is not one of my favorites. I want more detail in the butterfly and the blurring and fading detracts instead of enhances in this case, in my opinion. The butterfly’s head seems to be crisp and my mind is wanting the wings to be as well. The texture is ok as it does not detract.

Mary Nell, the fact that you try is a testament to you. Trying new things is difficult and sometimes it works. What suits someone’s eye does not always suit someone else’s. Photography being a form of art is subjective in its very nature. When we submit images for judging we sometimes walk away feeling the judge must be blind. Remember the great artists were not admired in their own time, and many died poor.

Difficult one. I think photography is an art form. This particular example does not do it for me but I am aware it is a subjective opinion. I think it is in the colours. With a wild life shot you may not have much choice in the matter but for me if it is art then I think how they hang together matters. All the other elements are spot on.

The colors are very pleasing, and I like the texture you chose. Less vignetting might make it even better, as I would like to see more detail of the butterfly.

I have got to agree with Susan about photography being a form of art. However, it doesn’t turn me on as one of your best. I have seen some super work from you and this one needs some improvement. The blurring or out of focus or DOF is where I’m getting turned off.
